Traveling to Cuba without taking car photos? Impossible
NPR has published several tributes to David Gilkey, the NPR photographer who was killed Sunday in a Taliban ambush while traveling with an Afghanistan army unit. One of those tributes had a link to an NPR piece about a trip Gilkey made to Cuba back in 2014. Before the trip, his editor told him that photos of Cuban cars were too cliched and to avoid them.
As Gilkey and his fellow NPR journalist discovered that’s an impossible task — the old American classics from the 1950s are too much a part of Cuban culture. Listen to Gilkey’s conversation with Scott Simon below and check out Gilkey’s photos here.
